Catalytic Methane Splitting

HyCarb is a visionary deep-tech company that developed a disruptive new technology to produce low-cost clean hydrogen – if from NG, it has no CO2 emissions, but if from BioMethane, it has a negative CO2 footprint – and metal-free graphitic carbon using a patented intermediate-temperature catalytic methane splitting (IT-CMS) technology.

Easy to implement

  • The innovative catalytic reactor operates at 750 °C and 1 bar, uses widely available materials and has a low CAPEX;
  • It displays high energy density, low maintenance, cost-effective plants that can be easily retrofitted in current SMR units;
  • It is easily implemented as centralized carbon / hydrogen production or decentralized mobile applications.

 

CO2 fixation

  • Reaction 100 % selective and COx-free emissions;
  • Negative carbon balance when biomethane is used as feedstock (atmospheric CO2 + photosynthesis -> biomass ->biomethane -> H2 + C);
  • Avoids the emissions of 79.3 Mt y-1 of CO2 (9 Mt of H2 

Economically competitive

  • Enables available gas storage and distribution infrastructure;
  • It produces high-value metal-free graphitic carbon nanofilaments with tailored particle sizes and with a market price >> 1 € kg-1;
  • Low CAPEX and OPEX: decarbonized hydrogen at <2 € kg-1.
